the death of the swamp

My dad and my brother, Jon, came down to stay with us a few weeks ago. While here they worked on fixing the level of the ground in our backyard so the pool of water (better known as “the swamp”) that’s been collecting in the side yard for months could finally drain off.

What they found when they started digging around in the mire came as no surprise. Hundreds, if not thousands, of tadpoles and frog eggs, in all stages of development. I may be prone to exaggeration, but I was so not kidding when I’ve blogged about the “frog farm” in the past and the horrid racket they made.

It took several weeks for the ground to absorb the overabundance of water, but today I was flabbergasted to find the “swamp” dry as a bone. Not a single drop of water to be found.

Also, it’s been two weeks and counting since I heard a single frog croak. And all I have to say about that is thankyouthankyouTHANKYOU!
