stone fire pit

Caleb’s weekend in the woods didn’t go down as smoothly as I had hoped. Even the sunniest Saturday can be a melancholy slump around here when he’s out of town so I decided to go all out with the activities this time. And I’m not a big planner, but I had things mapped out down to the breakfast we would eat in a circle on the livingroom cowhide.

Then I woke up Saturday morning. Sick. Like, really sick. Can’t get up without the room tilting back and forth and making me extremely seasick. I learned a lot of things that day. Like how a seven-year-old can deliver crackers on a toy box lid because he can’t find the dinner tray. And also how much halloween candy a five-year-old can consume when left to his own devices.

Luckily I was on the mend by the time Caleb came home on Sunday. I made him sit on the couch and listen to my horror stories of walking the dogs while sick and the one and only time I’ve ever thrown up in a bush. I don’t know if he was trying to lift my spirits or make up for the fact that he missed out on taking care of me… or just being his usual wonderful self, but on Monday he built me this:

Since roasting marshmallows around the fire pit is one of our favorite things to do as a family, we decided not to let another Fall pass without installing a permanent one in the backyard. It’s not quite finished yet, but the boys absolutely couldn’t wait a minute longer to light a fire.

Grainy, fireside photos are my favorite. Here’s hoping I have a bajillion of them before the season is out!
